Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) is a State-owned economic group, with its predecessor being the Vietnam National Coal Corporation, established in 1994. On August 8, 2005, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 198/2005/QD-TTg and Decision No. 199/2005/QD-TTg to reorganize the Vietnam National Coal Corporation and its member units, establishing the Vietnam Coal Group, operating under a parent-subsidiary model. On December 26, 2005, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 345/2005/QD-TTg to establish the Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group based on this. On June 25, 2010, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 989/QD-TTg on transforming the parent company – Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group into a one-member limited liability company wholly owned by the State.
After 27 years of formation and development, from a State-owned corporation operating in the coal production sector, Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has become a strong economic group with 4 main business sectors: Coal, Minerals, Electricity, and Industrial Explosives. The Group currently has 68 subsidiaries and affiliated units operating in 43 provinces and cities nationwide, with a total workforce of over 97,000 people.
Currently, Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) is considered the largest coal producer in Vietnam. Vinacomin currently has 21 underground and open-pit coal mining companies with a total mining capacity of approximately 47-50 million tons/year. Vinacomin’s biggest advantage lies in its large coal reserves, such as the Quang Ninh coal basin and the Red River Delta coal basin. At the same time, the increasing demand for coal also presents an opportunity for Vinacomin to continue expanding its operational scale and further develop.
In the future, Vinacomin operates with the goal of building Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group into a strong state-owned economic group with a rational structure; focusing on the production and business of coal, minerals, electricity, and industrial explosives. It aims to enhance efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainable development coupled with ecological environmental protection; contributing to promoting socio-economic development, ensuring national energy security, and proactively integrating into the international economy.
