Vietnam Electricity Corporation was established under Decision No. 562/QĐ-TTg dated October 10, 1994, by the Prime Minister based on the reorganization of units under the Ministry of Energy; organized and operated according to the Charter issued together with Decree No. 14/CP dated January 27, 1995, of the Government.
On June 22, 2006, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 147/QĐ-TTg approving the pilot project to form the Vietnam Electricity Group and Decision 148/2006/QĐ-TTG on the establishment of the parent company – Vietnam Electricity Group.
As of June 25, 2010, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 975/QĐ-TTg to convert the parent company – Vietnam Electricity Group into a one-member limited liability company wholly owned by the State.
On February 28, 2018, the Government issued Decree No. 26/2018/NĐ-CP on the organizational and operational charter of Vietnam Electricity Group.
On July 25, 2024, the Government issued Decree No. 97/2024/NĐ-CP amending and supplementing several articles of Decree No. 10/2019/NĐ-CP dated January 30, 2019, of the Government regarding the implementation of the rights and responsibilities of the representative of the state owner, effective from September 10, 2024.
On August 1, 2024, the Government issued Decree No. 105/2024/NĐ-CP, which amends and supplements several articles of Decree No. 26/2018/NĐ-CP on the organizational and operational charter of Vietnam Electricity Group.

To fulfill the mission of providing electricity for the socio-economic development needs of the country, EVN currently has 3 power generation corporations (EVNGENCO 1, 2, 3) and 9 hydropower/thermal power companies in the field of electricity production, 5 electricity distribution corporations that sell electricity to customers: Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC), Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI), Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC). The entity responsible for the electricity transmission sector of Vietnam Electricity Group is the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT).
