The Development History of FAW TRUCK

03/06/2025

1. The Genesis of China’s Automotive Industry (1953–1965)On July 15, 1953, FAW (First Automobile Works) was officially established in Changchun, Jilin Province, China, ushering in the era of modern automobile manufacturing in the country. With support from the Soviet Union, FAW completed its first automobile assembly plant in just three years and rolled out its first medium-duty truck – the Jiefang CA10 – in 1956. This was the first truck produced in China, symbolizing the nation’s indigenous industrial capability.

The Jiefang CA10 was not merely a transport product; it also symbolized strength, self-reliance, and economic development in the post-war era. Designed based on the Soviet ZIS-150 truck, the CA10 quickly became a mainstay in both military and civilian transportation.

2. Decade of Acceleration and Self-Reliance (1966–1979)During a period of significant change in China, FAW maintained steady development momentum. The company began researching new vehicle lines based on domestic demand, expanding the production of various truck models to serve infrastructure development and national defense. By the end of the 1970s, FAW had produced hundreds of thousands of trucks, solidifying its leading position in the heavy industry sector.

3. Reform, Modernization, and Product Diversification (1980–1999)Since the early 1980s, China embarked on its reform and opening-up policy. FAW leveraged this opportunity to collaborate with various foreign automakers such as Volkswagen, Toyota, and Mazda, thereby gaining access to more modern manufacturing technologies.

In the truck segment, FAW continued to upgrade the Jiefang series with versions featuring diesel engines, larger payloads, and enhanced durability. In 1983, the one-millionth Jiefang truck rolled off the production line, marking a historic milestone not only for FAW but also for China’s automotive industry.

4. Establishment of FAW Jiefang and the Launch of J6 – A New Symbol of Chinese Trucks (2000–2010)In 2003, FAW established FAW Jiefang Truck Co., Ltd., marking a strategic specialization and restructuring within the commercial vehicle segment. The FAW Jiefang brand subsequently became the dedicated manufacturer of medium and heavy-duty trucks in China.

In 2007, FAW launched the Jiefang J6 series, a new generation of heavy-duty trucks featuring modern design, powerful engines, fuel efficiency, and high safety standards. The J6 quickly became the best-selling model in its segment and a symbol of success for Chinese trucks during the modernization era.

5. Globalization, Technological Innovation, and Sustainable Development (2011–present)In the 2010s, FAW Trucks significantly increased investment in advanced technologies such as:

Global R&D: FAW established research centers in China, Germany, Japan, and the United States, employing over 5,000 engineers.

Electric and Autonomous Vehicle Technology: Focusing on the development of electric trucks, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and advanced autonomous driving technology.

Smart Manufacturing: Implementing 5G technology, artificial intelligence, and automation into the production chain.

In 2018, FAW launched the Jiefang J7, a premium heavy-duty truck series equipped with a smart cockpit, Internet connectivity, and active safety technology.

To date, FAW Jiefang has sold tens of millions of trucks globally, exporting to over 80 countries and regions in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe.

FAW Trucks aims to become a world-class truck manufacturer, leading not only in production volume but also in technology, after-sales service, and sustainable development. The company is committed to investing in green transportation solutions, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing user experience, while maintaining its pioneering role in China’s commercial vehicle industry.

Since its inception with the Jiefang CA10 in 1956, FAW Trucks has undergone over six decades of continuous development, becoming one of the leading truck manufacturers not only in China but also in the global market. Its diverse product range, advanced technology, and extensive after-sales network have helped FAW solidify its position. In Vietnam, FAW Trucks has been contributing to infrastructure and logistics development with reliable and cost-effective transportation solutions.
